The City of Cape Canaveral is a vibrant beachside community located on Florida’s mid-Atlantic coast. This 1.9 square mile beach and coastal community is bounded on the west by the Banana River, on the south by Cocoa Beach, on the east by the Atlantic ocean and on the north by Port Canaveral.
Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise embarkation port in the world! Located approximately midway between Jacksonville and Miami, and only 45 minutes from Orlando International Airport and Melbourne International Airport; it's easy to see why cruise lines such as Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian call this port home. Port Canveral also offers deep sea fishing charters, daily gambling cruises, and a variety of great waterfront restaurants; making it one of the most popular night life destinations in Brevard County.
Adjacent to the north side of Port Canaveral is the John F. Kennedy Space Center. NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida has long served as America's spaceport, hosting all of the federal government's manned spaceflights since the late 1960s. KSC spreads across 219 square miles on Merritt Island, just northwest of Cape Canaveral.
Since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011, Kennedy Space Center has been at the center of the next chapter of space flight. NASA is developing the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft for missions to deep space, including to Mars, leaving private companies to send people to low Earth orbit.
Boeing is building the CST-100 Starliner, a spacecraft that will send astronauts to the space station, in a hangar once used to prepare space shuttles for flight. Three Starliners are in production, including one that will fly astronauts next year.
SpaceX, which flies cargo missions to the space station with its Dragon spacecraft, has modified an old shuttle launch pad for its Falcon 9 rockets, which the company has successfully reused. It plans to use Dragon 2, a new version of the spacecraft, to send astronauts to the space station.
Blue Origin, founded by Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, is building a rocket factory; it also plans to launch its rockets from Cape Canaveral.
